BCCI Decided To Retire Dhoni Iconic No.7 Indian Jersey

The BCCI has decided to remove the iconic number No.7 from the jersey of current Indian cricketers, as they have been advised not to choose Dhoni's jersey number.

The ‘Number Scramble’ in Indian Cricket:

After Tendulkar’s jersey number 10, MS Dhoni’s number 7 will also be retired by the BCCI. This means that no other cricketer will get the jersey number 7 going forward. Usually, cricketers are allowed to choose their preferred number before making their India debut. According to ICC rules, cricketers can choose any number from 1 to 100. However, according to a report in the Indian Express, BCCI informed the youngsters that they can no longer request for the number 7 jersey. The number 10 was removed from the list of Indian players in 2017.

M S Dhoni's number 7 jersey will be retired by the BCCI for the benefit of the young players and the current Indian team players.

The BCCI has also decided to retire MS Dhoni's T-shirt for the sake of the game.

“A new player cannot get the number 7 jersey, and the number 10 jersey has already been removed from the list,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.

Three-and-a-half years after retiring from the game in August 2020, Dhoni made his final appearance in India's jersey number 7 in the semi-final of the 2019 ICC World Cup against New Zealand at the Manchester Stadium in England on Saturday.

The former skipper will undoubtedly go down in history as one of India's greatest players. He holds the distinction of being the only captain in the history of the ICC to have triumphed in all three white-ball formats of the tournament.

He captained a young Indian team to win the inaugural T20WC in South Africa in 2007.

Four years later, in the 2011 ODIWC final against Sri Lanka, Dhoni ended India’s 28-year wait for a World Cup title when he hit an iconic six off the bat of skipper Ravichandran Ashwin.

Dhoni captained India in the Champions Trophy in 2013. It was also India’s final ICC title.

The Ranchi-born cricketer continues to lead Chennai Super Kings as the captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He has played 90 ODIs, 350 T20Is and 98 Tests for India, scoring 4876 runs, 10773 and 1617 respectively.

Dhoni is also India's all-time leading wicketkeeper with 634 catches, 195 stumping, which makes him the third wicketkeeper-in-class wicketkeeper behind South Africa’s Mark Boucher (3 times) and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist (2 times).

However, due to the decision of retiring jersey numbers, the youngsters in the national team have very limited options. Under the current setup, the new players are only allowed to pick the jersey number of the former cricketers who have retired.

Currently, there are more than 60 numbers assigned to the senior players in the national team and to the players who are in contention. Even if a player has been out of the national team for around a year, we do not give away their number to the new players. This means that a young debutant has only 30 numbers to pick from, said an official of the BCCI.

According to the report, Yashaswi Jaiswal, India's 19-year-old left-handed opener, wanted jersey number 19. However, due to the same number being used by skipper Dineshwar Pujat and not yet retired, Jaiswal, a left-handed batsman, was forced to settle for number 64.
